Register Your .EU domain

The .EU Domain

The .eu domain is the second most popular suffix in our country. Like state and territorial domains, the so-called ccTLD (country code top-level domain) is defined by the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard. Specifically, the EU code is assigned to the territory of the states that make up the European Union.

The .eu domain also has its IDN variants, namely .ею (Cyrillic) and .ευ (Greek), which are intended for the local market. The condition for .ею and .ευ is the need to use only characters from Cyrillic or Greek. WEDOS does not yet offer registration and administration of .ею and .ευ domains.

The .eu domain, however, supports IDN (only EU language characters), so you can have your own czechdomain.eu. We, of course, understand IDN domains 🙂

As of March 2021, more than 3.6 million .eu, .ею and .ευ domains were registered worldwide.

At the same time, interest in the .eu domain is gradually growing in our country. Since 2010, when we became an accredited registrar for .eu domains, the number of domains we take care of has climbed to more than 50,000 .eu domains (as of the end of March 2021).

Who is Behind the .EU Domain

The .eu domain is managed by EURid, which is directly accountable to the European Commission, which oversees its activities. EURid is headquartered in Diegem, Belgium, but EURid also has regional offices in Pisa, Stockholm and even Prague.

You may be interested to know that the arbitration court for the .eu domain is entrusted to the Arbitration Court at the Czech Chamber of Commerce and the Czech Agrarian Chamber. This is an indisputable advantage over other domains, where you would have to solve any problems abroad.

As an EU subordinate organization, EURid must also provide support and communication in all Member States’ languages, including Czech. We also provide full customer support for .eu domains in Czech and English 🙂

Web Awards

Since 2014, EURid has been organizing the Web Awards competition, which recognizes websites on the .eu, .ею or .ευ domains in five categories (“Leaders”, “Rising stars”, “Laurels”, “House of .eu” and Better World.)

Anyone who has their own website on the .eu domain can take part in the competition. The reward is mainly the visibility of the website and if you are lucky you can even win a billboard with your advertisement at Brussels Airport for 2 months.

EURid’s Fight for High Quality .EU Domains

One of the great advantages of the .eu domain is that EURid fights for its reputation on several levels. As a registry, it is certified according to the ISO 27001 standard (information security), which we also have. All personal data is handled in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which entered into force on May 25, 2018. So, for example, if you register domains for your customers, you know that their data at EURid is not only safe but also in accordance with GDRP. In addition, personal data can be hidden from the .eu domain detail.

EURid supports and promotes security technologies such as DNSSEC (Setting up DNSSEC at .eu on WEDOS). It uses its own DNSQuality Score solution to control DNS quality and security. It also allows the domain to be locked in the registry so that no one can manipulate it.

EURid also fights against trademark abuse and “bad registrations” where the domain could be misused for malicious activity. They actively monitor registered domains and cooperate with organizations and institutions that aim to protect the Internet against cybercrime (EUIPO, CAC, WIPO Center).

Therefore, EURid has long and systematically worked to maintain the reputation of .eu domains, which is a significant advantage over many competing domains. Deliberately try to look in your SPAM to see from which domains spam most often comes. Although .eu is one of the cheapest domains to register, you will find very few, if any.

Why We Offer the .EU Domain

The .eu domain has long been the second most popular with our customers. Some customers prefer it due to a better price compared to other domains (for the extension it is one of the cheapest in our offer), others want to show that their products and services are not only intended for the Czech market.

We also encounter the trend of creating personal presentations and blogs on the .eu domain, especially for young people, for the purpose of future personal growth. They want to reach out to their future employers from other countries.

In earlier years, the .eu domain was sometimes taken as an alternative to the .com domain. That is definitely not the case today. We have experienced a much lower interest in the .com domain than in the .eu domain. New generations of Internet users no longer perceive the .com domain as a universal multinational domain. In contrast, they see the .eu domain as a European domain.

We also devote a lot of space to the .eu domain in our marketing activities thanks to the great cooperation with EURid. Together, we prepare advantageous offers for our customers and they contribute to us, for example, for common promotional items and prizes in competitions for new and existing customers.

Is .EU for You?

There aren’t many domains that have as much impact as .eu. It’s not just about targeting a region, a demonstration of where you belong, but also what the .eu domain represents.

The Most Ecological Domain in Europe

If you want to present yourself as an environmentally friendly company, so should your website. You already have environmentally friendly hosting services. WEDOS has the ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certification, we use energy-saving technologies (cooling, servers, processors …) and our DC WEDOS 2 data center cools servers in an oil bath and send excess heat to the city pool. You won’t find anything greener far and wide 🙂

But what about the domain?

EURid has long sought to minimize the environmental impact of its activities. Like us, it has the ISO 14001 certification. It was the first European registry to register with the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). This program helps companies optimize production processes, reduce environmental impact and use resources more efficiently.

In addition, their activities support a lot of interesting projects outside the EU:

  • 2014 – Construction of wind turbines and production of biodiesel from the seeds of the Jatropha plant in Gujarat, India.
  • 2015 – Planting of fruit trees in Asturias, Spain, in an area inhabited by the endangered European brown bear, in cooperation with the Spanish organization FAPAS under the “+ BEARS-CO2” program.
  • 2015 – Support for the Ecomapuà project, which aims, among other things, to protect the rich biodiversity of the Amazon.
  • 2016 – Support for the Dak Rung hydropower project in Vietnam. This renewable energy project was based on the construction of an 8MW hydroelectric power plant on the Dak Rung River, which supplies electricity from renewable sources to both the local population and the Vietnamese energy system.
  • 2017-2018 – support for a project to restore drilled wells in Uganda. The aim of the project is to improve the situation by working with the Ugandan community to repair broken wells and restore access to clean and safe drinking water. In 2018, we supported this project for the second year in a row, this time focusing on the Ugandan areas of Dokolo, Otuke and Alebtong.
  • 2019 – support for a project to restore drilled wells in Uganda and also support for a project to restore a forest in Monchique, Portugal, in an area affected by devastating fires in the summer of 2018.
  • 2020 – Support for the “Water is Life” project in Madagascar.

If you choose an .eu domain for your website, you can not only be sure that you minimize the impact on the environment, but you will also support interesting projects that help.

Who Uses the .EU Domain Most Often

According to a November 2020 survey conducted by EURid on 150,000 selected domains, the following content is most often found on them.

Trade 17,62%
Production 11,91%
Community groups 8,72%
IT 6,95%
Entertainment 6,86%
Project management, marketing and administration 5,05%
Tourism and accommodation 4,47%
Construction 3,55%
Healthcare 3,29%
Education 3,03%

In our experience, .eu domains are most often used by:

E-shops

It does not matter whether the e-shop targets the Czech market or offers distribution of goods to other EU countries. Customers choose the .eu domain for their e-shop because:

  • The appropriate .cz domain is no longer available, and the .eu still offers a number of nice free domain opportunities.
  • They want to show that they sell European goods.
  • They plan to expand to foreign markets and other language versions of the site will be addressed on the same domain.
  • They want to target linguistically close markets (Slovakia, Poland), but they want to avoid the local domain.

Companies with Transnational Overlap

Being a company in Europe is no handicap, quite the opposite. The .eu domain aids this, because the condition for its registration is to be based in the EU. With it, customers from all over the world will understand you at a glance.

In addition, you will avoid the prejudices about whether you only supply locally that you would experience with a national domain. You avoid being judged by customers right away, and them perhaps misjudging which part of the planet you are from.

Personal presentations for those who do not want to be limited to the Czech Republic

We live in a time when people are building a personal brand on the Internet. The successful ones have their own websites, where they have their CV for example and sometimes they contribute a demonstration of their work. Not only headhunters who are looking for talented and skilful people for their clients can easily find them. It works well, we found a few colleagues for us in WEDOS 🙂

If you want to show that you are not afraid to work abroad, then choose the .eu domain.

Tourism and Accommodation

If you are targeting foreign clients to whom you want to offer an experience or accommodation, then the .eu domain is certainly an interesting choice, especially in combination with the name of the city or locality. Many official websites of cities, state organizations and authorities use the .eu domain, not only for communication with foreign tourists.

With the .eu domain, your customers will assume that you will have a presentation in at least English and that your staff will speak English. In addition, EURid invests a lot of money in promoting the .eu domain as high quality and secure.
